Tried the new Alpro Ice creams yet? Alpro, the vegan brand that just keep givin’. They’ve presented the sweet-toothed vegans and dairy-free’s with some more creamy delights. Competing again our favourite Swedish Glace and Coconut Collaborative Ice Cream, we have the three flavours of Alpro ice-cream:
- Vanilla – Soy based
- Hazelnut Chocolate – Hazelnut based
- Coconut – Coconut Based
The Hungry Herbivores get a tad excited about new vegan products, so of course, we went out and bought all of the flavours… It sounds more acceptable to buy them all at once if we say we are doing a product review for you guys, but secretly it’s the perfectly justifiable excuse to satisfy our ice cream excitement.
Nevertheless, the highly critical Hungry Herbivore taste-buds took to the test with our spoons at the ready.
Our Verdict:
I must add here, I took my reviewing responsibilities seriously and ate half the tub of Hazelnut Chocolate. Give you one guess which way my preference swayed.
- Vanilla: This one is definitely the softest of the three flavours. Probably the easiest to dig to the bottom of the tub before realising you’ve eaten a bit too much, since it’s light and not too rich. Vanilla is always a great base since it has a sweet but neutral flavour. Perfect for ice-cream floats. However, soy-based ice cream is pretty easy to come by in any store. Yes, it is a classic and does work well as an ice cream, but us Herbivores like something with a bit more sass. Since a lot of people tend to avoid vast quantities of soy anyway, it may not be the best option for a lot of people.
- Hazelnut Chocolate: We’re big chocolate fans, therefore a big fan of this one. We’d say this has the richest flavour, but that unfortunately wont stop me keep digging into the tub. We like that this one is Hazelnut based, as I haven’t seen many other affordable, commercially available hazelnut ice creams. Hazelnut chocolate give a more interesting combination of flavours for those who don’t fancy going plain and simple.
- Coconut: Super creamy and has a distinctive coconut taste. I love coconut based products and just coconuts on a whole – they are magical ingredients for a vegan diet. Like the vanilla, this is a great base ice cream with a simple but rich flavour too.
All three are super soft and creamy, so you only need to wait a few minutes before digging in. Taste wise, these ice creams are top notch and the convenience of this shop brought, affordable ice cream makes it all the more tempting. Plant-based ethical ice cream also provide a healthier alternative, considering it is much lower in bad fats, instead coconut and nuts provide healthy fats. Alpro is quick to advertise the low calorie content of these ice creams in comparison to dairy based ice cream, which means it “guilt-free” right? Hm… Ice cream is marketed as an indulgent and these are no exceptions. There is really no debate that plant based ice cream is a healthier alternative to dairy ice creams, yet the sugar content is high. If this bothers you, then these ice creams are better eaten in moderation (if you have better self discipline than me.) Otherwise, try making your own plant based ice cream to reduce the sugar content yourself!
Its such as you learn my mind! You appear to know
a lot about this, like you wrote the e-book in it or
something. I think that you simply could do with some % to power the message home a little bit, but other than that, this
is excellent blog. A fantastic read. I will definitely be back.
Thanks a lot!
